Costume Mario is the form Mario turns into in Super Mario Maker after obtaining a Mystery Mushroom that allows Mario to transform into numerous versions of Nintendo and third-party characters, objects or groups referred to as Mystery Costumes. Costume Mario is not present in the 3DS version.Note
There are a total of 153 costumes. In Super Mario Maker 2, this form was replaced with a full-functioning Link form.
Overview[]
Costume Mario functions similar Super Mario, but with Small Mario's physical stature granting him the ability to break Brick Blocks and crouch. Costume Mario cannot wear any Shellmets. In addition to appearance, various sound effects may also be changed to reflect the character, such as the jumping sound effects and Course Clear fanfare. The power-up sound effect may also be replaced by a different sound effect from the character's home series.
Costume Mario is only available in the Super Mario Bros. game style.
How to Unlock[]
Mystery Costumes can be unlocked through various methods
- Scanning the corresponding amiibo figure of the character
- Completing the 100 Mario Challenge on various difficulties
- Completing certain Event Courses
- Beating Gnat Attack

Each Mystery Costume has a unique pose if the player presses and holds Up.

Costume Check[]
Because Costume Mario is unable to wear Shellmets it is possible to create a setup that can detect when the player is not wearing a costume. When a shell falls on Costume Mario's head it will be kicked instead of worn. If a player is not Costume Mario they will be unable to cause the POW Block to explode since Mario is also unable to carry items in the Super Mario Bros. game style.
Additionally placing a Semisolid at the top of the door will prevent Buzzy or Spiny Mario from being able to pass.
