Bob-ombs are enemies in Super Mario Maker that resemble living, moving mechanical bombs with eyes, feet, and a wind-up key on the back.
Overview[]
Bob-ombs walk forward in one direction until it falls off a ledge or hits a wall, at which point it will turn around. Bob-ombs will explode 4 seconds after being ignited, destroying any blocks or enemies in its range. When a Bob-omb is hit by the player it will permanently lose its ability to walk and can then be carried by the player until it explodes.
Bob-ombs appear in all four game styles.
Variations[]
Bob-ombs can be modified by dragging a Super Mushroom or Wings onto it, or by shaking it to change it into its alternate form.
- Default
- Bob-omb: The default variant that walks forward and explodes after being hit.
- Parabomb: A variant that flies in the air sideways; jumping on it will cause it to lose its wings and revert to a normal Bob-omb. It is created by dragging Wings onto a Bob-omb.
- Giant Bob-omb: A variant that is twice as large and has bigger explosions. It is created by dragging a Super Mushroom onto a Bob-omb.
- Giant Parabomb: A variant that is twice as large and has bigger explosions, but otherwise behaves the same as a Parabomb.
- Alternate Form
- Lit Bob-omb: A variant that is pre-ignited allowing it to explode without first being hit.
- Lit Parabomb: A variant that is pre-ignited, but otherwise behaves the same as a Parabomb.
- Giant Lit Bob-omb: A variant that is pre-ignited, but otherwise behaves the same as a Giant Bob-omb.
- Giant Lit Parabomb: A variant that is pre-ignited, but otherwise behaves the same as a Giant Parabomb.
How To Defeat[]
Bob-ombs will explode 4 seconds after being ignited. They can be ignited by jumping on them, hitting the block underneath, or by making contact with fire-based objects (Fireballs, Lava Bubbles, etc). Crushing a Bob-omb with a heavy object, such as a Muncher, will cause it to immediately explode.
Bob-ombs can be defeated without exploding if it is killed in the following ways:
- Being hit by a thrown or kicked enemy
- Being stomped (while inside a Goomba's Shoe)
- Doing a Dive Bomb (as Cape Mario)
- Hitting it from below (as Spiny Mario)
- POW Block explosion
- Swallowing it (while riding on Yoshi)
- Touching it (as Invincible Mario)
Mechanics[]
Basic Uses[]
Explosion Timer Reset[]
While normally a Bob-omb will explode 4 seconds after being hit, going through a Door or Pipe will reset the amount of time left until it explodes back to the full 4 seconds. This can be repeated indefinetly.
Fireball Stalling[]
When a Bob-omb is hit by a Fireball fired by the player (Fire Mario, Yoshi) it briefly stalls in the air. This can be used to move the Bob-omb across a gap, or stall it long enough to bounce off it in midair.
Triggering POW Blocks[]
Bob-ombs can be used to trigger POW Blocks if one is placed directly on top of a destructible block which gets destroyed by the Bob-omb explosion. This mechanic can be used to create a timer in survival rooms.[1]
Advanced Uses[]
Bob-omb Riding[]
- See Bob-omb Riding for full variations and details.
Unlike in previous games, when Mario Spin Jumps on a Bob-omb, rather than being immediately defeated, it gets kicked in the opposite direction depending on which side the player lands on. This will also happen in the player jumps on a Bob-omb as Big Mario or while riding on Yoshi.
This concept allows Mario to cross large distances by riding on top of it and is also implemented in a Bob-omb Elevator, where Mario spin jumps on a Bob-omb while hitting a sideways spring, allowing it to rebound upwards.
