Kaizo Mario World (JP) is a series of three extremely hard ROM hacks of Super Mario World, created by T. Takemoto. Kaizo Mario World completely reworks the Super Mario World level designs to make them extremely difficult.

The hack deliberately breaks all normal rules of "good practice" level design, for example by placing invisible blocks where the player is likely to jump. This cruelty and the resulting frustration, as well as the skill level required, is part of the appeal of Kaizo Mario World Let's Play videos.

All in all, Takemoto has created three Kaizo Mario World games: Kaizo Mario World 1, Kaizo Mario World 2, and Kaizo Mario World 3.

Meaning of the word Kaizo[]

The Japanese word "改造" (kaizō) translates into English as "restructure" or "hack".

Reception[]

In 2015, IGN stated about Kaizo Mario World - "It’s funny, impressive, and extremely entertaining. Kaizo Mario wasn’t the first mean Mario hack, but it was the most polished, and the first to understand that it’s not just about being as hard as possible. Punishing players is an art form."

Legacy[]

Kaizo Mario World's prominence has lead to the Kaizo name being reused by many other games not made by Takemoto as a way to indicate a sadistic level of difficulty. This has also lead to the term Kaizo Hack, meaning a ROM hack of a game intended to be extremely difficult or unfair, that is intended to push the difficulty to the limits of human capabilities. Excessively hard hacks, such as the Item Abuse series, that go very far beyond human skills, are referred to as Pit Hacks.

Kaizo Mario World has also been the inspiration for many levels created within Super Mario Maker. One of the most notable is a level created by PangaeaPanga titled "Pit of Panga: P-Break", which was for a long time considered to be the hardest level in Super Mario Maker. It is also the inspiration for the weekly Blind Kaizo Races.
