Tutorial |
Flight Storage is an intermediate trick used in Super Mario Maker. This trick allows Cape Mario to retain the ability to fly when standing still, which is normally not possible.
How It Works[]
Mario will naturally have stored flight while in midair if he runs off a ledge after reaching cape speed, or by doing a Spin Fly. However, it is also possible to gain stored flight by collecting a Cape Feather in midair after reaching cape speed.
Gaining Flight[]
Mario is able to start a flight without needing any horizontal momentum by doing one of the following actions:
- Bouncing on an enemy
- Starting a Spin Fly (even while holding an item)
- Throwing an item and jumping during the animation

Maintaining Stored Flight[]
Cape Spin[]
Causing Mario to constantly spin his cape while still holding down the run button will allow him to retain the ability to fly while touching the ground. This must be done with the use of both X and Y, with one being held down and the other being used to spin Mario's cape.
This also allows Mario to jump without flying after reaching cape speed.

Action Animations[]
Mario will also be able to retain the ability fly if he touches the ground during an action animation, such as throwing an item or using a Fire Flower.

Yoshi[]
When Mario is on Yoshi he is able to store his flight as long as he is still in the air. This results in Mario being able to start a flight from dismounting Yoshi.

Losing Stored Flight[]
Mario will lose his stored flight if he does one of the following actions without also doing one of the above methods to retain it:
- Lands on the ground
- Turns around in midair while holding an item (while floating)
